What a chase cover does
A factory-built fireplace vents through a metal chimney pipe that runs up inside a framed enclosure, the chase. The chase cover is the sheet metal top of that enclosure, with a hole and collar where the chimney pipe comes through. If the cover leaks, water runs straight into the wood framing and down to the fireplace.
A chase cover is not a chimney cap. The cap sits on top of the pipe; the cover closes the whole box around it.
Why old covers fail
Builders often install thin, flat, painted steel covers. They sag in the middle, hold water and rust through within some years in humid or salty air. The rust then stains the siding below and opens holes that let rain into the chase.
A replacement cover is built with cross-breaks or a slope so water runs off, a raised collar around the pipe and a drip edge that throws water clear of the chase walls.
Choosing the metal
Stainless steel is the long-lasting choice and what we fit most often. Aluminum does not rust and suits many homes near the water. Galvanized steel costs less up front but tends to rust sooner in coastal air. We go over the options with you before ordering.
Each cover is measured and made to the size of your chase, so it fits tight without gaps at the edges.
Checking the chase while the cover is off
Removing the old cover shows the condition of the top plate and framing. Soft or rotted wood means water has been getting in for a while, and that repair is covered on our chimney chase repair page. We also check the storm collar and cap on the chimney pipe, which must be parts listed for that chimney system.
When everything is sound, the new cover goes on, fastened through the sides of the chase and sealed at the collar.

Questions Homeowners Ask Us
What is a chase cover on a chimney?
A chase cover is the sheet metal lid on top of a framed chimney chase, the box that hides a factory-built chimney pipe. The cover sheds rain off the chase and has a collar where the pipe passes through. A leaking cover lets water into the framing and down to the fireplace.
How much does a chimney chase cover replacement cost?
Chase cover replacement depends on the size of the chase, the metal chosen and whether the framing under the old cover needs repair. Stainless steel costs more than galvanized but lasts much longer in coastal air; roof access also plays a part, and the free inspection gives you a written price.
Is a chase cover the same as a chimney cap?
No. A chase cover is the metal lid on the framed chase box. The chimney cap sits on the chimney pipe itself and keeps rain and animals out of the flue. Most factory-built chimneys have both parts, and a leak can start at either one.
Why does a chase cover rust?
Chase covers rust when they are made of thin painted or galvanized steel and hold standing water on a flat top. Humid, salty air speeds up the corrosion; a cover with a sloped or cross-broken top, a drip edge and stainless steel or aluminum metal avoids most rust problems.
Can a chimney chase cover leak?
Yes. A chase cover leaks when it rusts through, sags and holds water, separates at the seams or loses the seal around the chimney pipe collar. The water runs into the wood framing of the chase and can show up as stains near the fireplace. Replacing the cover and sealing the collar stops the leak.
What is a chase cover made of?
Chase covers are usually made of galvanized steel, stainless steel or aluminum sheet metal. Galvanized is the cheapest and rusts soonest, especially near the coast; stainless steel and aluminum resist corrosion much better and are worth the difference on a home in a humid, salty climate.
