What a sweep actually removes
Wood smoke cools as it climbs the flue and leaves soot and creosote on the walls. Early deposits are dry and sooty and come off with brushes. Left for several seasons, they turn tarry and then glazed, and that hard layer burns hot if a stray spark reaches it. A regular sweep keeps the flue at the stage where brushing still works.
Glazed creosote that brushes will not move is a different job, covered on our creosote removal page. During a sweep we tell you if we find it, rather than leaving it in place unmentioned.
How we keep the house clean
Before any brush goes in, we lay drop cloths from the hearth out across the floor and seal the fireplace opening. The brushing runs from the top, the bottom or both, depending on the chimney and the roof. A vacuum runs the whole time so the dust is pulled into the machine instead of drifting into the room.
When the flue is done we clean the smoke shelf and firebox, pack the debris out of the house and wipe down the hearth. Most homeowners only notice we were there because the fireplace looks better.
Sweeping is also a look inside
With the deposits gone, the flue liner, the damper and the smoke chamber can actually be seen. NFPA 211 asks for chimneys to be inspected every year and cleaned when deposits build up, and a sweep is the natural moment to do both. We tell you what we saw: cracked tiles, a rusted damper, a missing cap or simply a chimney in good shape.
If something needs repair, you get it in writing with a price, and you decide when to do it. Nothing extra is added to the sweep without your approval.
When to book a sweep
How often a chimney needs sweeping depends on how much the fireplace is used and what is burned in it. A fireplace lit on a few cool evenings builds up slowly; one used most nights builds up much faster, and damp or green wood speeds it up again. Our cleaning and inspection guide covers the timing in more detail.
Booking before the first cool evening means the fireplace is ready when you want it, though a Panama City sweep can be scheduled in any season.

Questions Homeowners Ask Us
How often should you sweep your chimney?
NFPA 211 calls for a yearly chimney inspection and a cleaning whenever soot and creosote have built up enough to need one. A fireplace used most evenings may need sweeping every year, while one lit a handful of times can go longer. The inspection is what tells you which group your chimney is in.
Does chimney sweeping remove creosote?
Yes, sweeping removes soot and the first stages of creosote, which are dry, flaky and light enough for brushes to lift. Hard, glazed creosote that has baked onto the flue walls needs rotary tools or a chemical treatment instead; our crew tells you which kind your flue holds once the first pass with the brushes is done.
Is chimney sweeping necessary?
Sweeping is necessary for any fireplace that burns wood, because creosote is fuel sitting inside the flue. A thick layer can ignite into a chimney fire, and heavy soot narrows the flue until smoke spills into the room. Regular cleaning also gives the crew a clear look at the liner, damper and cap.
Does chimney sweeping make a mess?
A proper sweep should leave the room as clean as it was. Our crew lays drop cloths, seals the fireplace opening and runs a vacuum while the brushes work, so the soot ends up in the machine; then the debris is bagged and taken away, and the hearth is wiped down before we leave.
Do chimney cleaning logs work?
Chimney cleaning logs can loosen some soft creosote, but the loosened material still has to fall out or be brushed away. The logs do not remove glazed creosote, and they show nothing about cracked flue tile or a damaged cap. A log can sit between sweeps, but the brushes and the inspection still have to happen.
How long does it take to clean a chimney?
Most chimney sweeps take about an hour to two hours, including the setup, the brushing and the cleanup. A tall chimney, two flues or heavy creosote adds time, and so does a steep or tile roof; the crew gives you a time window when the visit is booked, then confirms it once we see the chimney.
