What a chimney cap does
Without a cap, a flue is an open pipe pointed at the sky. Rain falls straight in and soaks the damper and smoke chamber, leaves and nests collect on the smoke shelf, and animals look for a dry place to live. A screened cap closes all of that off while letting smoke out.
The screen also works as a spark arrestor, catching embers that would otherwise land on the roof. NFPA 211 sets the opening size for that screen, which is one reason we fit caps made for the purpose rather than improvised covers.
Single-flue caps and full-crown caps
A single-flue cap slips over or clamps onto one clay flue tile sticking up from the crown. Most chimneys have this style, and it is the simplest to replace. A full-crown cap, sometimes called an outside-mount cap, covers the whole top of the chimney and every flue on it, and it fastens to the crown itself.
Full-crown caps protect the crown from direct rain as well, which helps on older chimneys whose crown has started to craze. On a chimney with two flues, one larger cap is often simpler and stronger than two small ones.
Choosing metal for a coastal city
Galvanized and painted steel caps are inexpensive, but in humid, salty air they rust within a few seasons and leave orange streaks down the brick. Stainless steel lasts much longer and is what we fit on most jobs. Copper costs more and darkens to brown, and some homeowners pick it for the look.
Whatever the metal, fastening matters as much as the material. A cap that sits on a flue tile with one loose screw is the cap we find in the yard after a storm. Our hurricane chimney prep guide lists the other parts worth checking before the season.
What we check while we are up there
Taking the old cap off is a good moment to look at the crown, the top of the flue tile and the mortar around it. If the crown has cracks, sealing them before the new cap goes on saves a second trip. If animals have been nesting, we clear the nest material from the top of the flue first.
Factory-built chimneys use a cap from the system's own listing rather than a masonry cap; those are covered on our chase cover page.

Questions Homeowners Ask Us
Do chimney caps keep water out?
A cap keeps most rain from falling straight down the flue, which protects the damper, smoke chamber and firebox from rust and staining. Wind-driven rain can still reach the crown and the brick, so a cap does not stop leaks caused by a cracked crown or failed flashing. Those parts need their own repair.
When should a chimney cap be replaced?
Replace the cap once the metal rusts through or the screen tears. A bent hood, or a cap that rattles loose in wind, needs the same fix; a missing cap should be replaced before the next rain, and orange streaks on the crown warn that a painted or galvanized cap is near the end.
How long do chimney caps last?
Cap life depends mostly on the metal and the air around it. Painted and galvanized steel corrodes fastest in humid coastal air, often within a few years. Stainless steel and copper caps hold up far longer when they are fastened well and the crown under them stays sound.
Is a chimney cap necessary?
Yes for nearly every chimney in Florida. A cap keeps rain off the damper and smoke chamber, keeps birds and squirrels out of the flue and stops embers landing on the roof; NFPA 211 also expects a spark arrestor screen on many chimneys, and the cap screen is usually what provides it.
What size chimney cap do I need?
Cap size starts with the outside measurement of the flue tile, length and width, plus how high the tile stands above the crown. A full-crown cap is sized to the top of the chimney instead. Our crew measures on the free inspection so the cap fits the first time, rather than guessing from the ground.
Can a chimney cap cause a downdraft?
A cap that is too low, clogged with leaves or blocked by a nest can make smoke roll back into the room. A correctly sized cap with a clear screen should not hurt the draft; when a downdraft started right after a new cap went on, the cap height or screen opening is the first thing to check.
