At a glance

Top sealing dampers sit on the flue tile and close the chimney from above with a rubber gasket. A cable runs down to the firebox to open and close the lid; our Panama City crew fits one when the old throat damper has rusted, and most models serve as the cap too.

Signs This Job Is Due

A top sealing damper sits on top of the flue instead of down in the throat of the fireplace. A cable runs down to the firebox, and pulling it closes a lid with a rubber gasket over the flue. It keeps rain, bugs and humid air out when the fireplace is not in use, and it is a common fix when the old throat damper has rusted beyond repair.

  • A throat damper rusted shut, open or missing
  • Humid or musty air drifting from the fireplace
  • Insects or debris coming down the flue
  • Air conditioning escaping up an idle chimney

How a top damper works

The damper frame is sealed to the top flue tile and a spring holds the lid open. Pulling the cable from the firebox closes the lid against a gasket, sealing the flue. Releasing the cable lets the spring open it again. Most top dampers include a screen, so they serve as the chimney cap too.

Because the seal sits at the top, the whole flue stays out of the weather when closed.

When it beats a throat damper

Old cast iron throat dampers rust and warp, and many never sealed well to begin with. Replacing one inside a fireplace can be awkward. A top sealing damper avoids the throat altogether and seals far tighter, which helps keep cooled indoor air from escaping up the chimney.

The old throat damper is left open or removed so it does not block the draft.

Using it safely

The damper must be fully open before any fire is lit and stay open until the fire is out and cold. We show you how the cable and handle work and where to keep the handle visible.

Questions Homeowners Ask Us

Can a chimney cap and damper be combined?

Yes. A top sealing damper with a screened lid works as both the chimney cap and the damper. It keeps rain and animals out like a cap, and it seals the flue closed with a gasket when the fireplace is not in use. The cable to the firebox opens and closes it.

What is the difference between a chimney cap and a damper?

A chimney cap is a screened hood on top of the flue that keeps rain and animals out while smoke escapes. A damper is a plate that opens and closes the flue, either in the throat above the firebox or at the top; a top sealing damper combines both jobs in one unit.

What is a chimney damper cap?

A chimney damper cap is a top-mounted damper with a built-in screen and lid. It sits on the top flue tile, seals the flue with a gasket when closed and opens with a spring when the cable is released. It replaces a separate cap and throat damper on many chimneys.

Is a chimney cap with a damper worth adding?

Often, yes. A cap with a damper earns its place when the throat damper is rusted or missing, or when humid air and insects come down the idle chimney; its gasket seals tighter than most throat dampers and keeps cooled air from escaping up the flue, but it must be open whenever a fire burns.
