Panama City Chimney Emergency?

Our 24/7 emergency line is staffed around the clock, and after the danger passes we work out the repair with you.

Flames, a gas odor or a sounding CO alarm: take everyone out of the house and dial 911. Phone the gas utility only once you are outdoors.

What counts as an emergency

We treat a call as urgent when waiting would cause more damage or put someone at risk. Water coming into the house in a storm, a chimney top that has come loose, brick that could fall on someone and an animal trapped in the flue all qualify. A slow drip that started this week can usually wait for a normal visit, and we will tell you honestly if that is the case.

If you are not sure, call. A short conversation often settles what needs doing tonight and what can wait until daylight.

Safety first

A chimney fire, smoke filling the room, a gas smell or a carbon monoxide alarm are jobs for 911 and the gas utility first, not for a chimney company. Get everyone out, call from outside and do not go back in. Once the fire department has cleared the house, the chimney needs a full inspection before anyone uses the fireplace again.

Please do not climb onto a wet or windy roof to look at the chimney yourself. Tell us what you can see from the ground.

Temporary first, permanent after

In an emergency our first job is to stop the damage: cover an open flue, tarp around the chimney, secure loose brick or metal, or close off the fireplace opening. The permanent repair, such as a new cap, crown or flashing, is then planned and priced in writing.

Making the top safe during a storm and doing the real repair on a dry day usually gives the better result.

Questions Homeowners Ask Us

What should I do during a chimney fire?

During a chimney fire, get everyone out of the house and call 911 from outside. If you can do it safely on the way out, close the fireplace doors or damper to cut the air supply, but do not stay inside to fight the fire. After the fire department clears the house, the chimney needs a full inspection before any further use.

Can a fireplace leak gas?

A gas fireplace or a gas line to a fireplace can leak, usually at a fitting, a connector or a damaged control. A rotten egg smell is the warning sign. Leave the house, do not switch lights or appliances on or off, and call the gas utility and 911 from outside. A technician repairs the leak only after the utility has made it safe.

What should I do if smoke is coming into the house from the chimney?

When smoke comes into the house, let the fire burn down, open windows and keep people away from the room. Check that the damper is fully open. Heavy smoke, a burning smell from walls or a carbon monoxide alarm means leaving the house and calling 911. A blocked flue, a missing cap or poor draft is then checked before the next fire.

Should I have the chimney inspected after a chimney fire?

Yes. NFPA 211 calls for an inspection after any chimney fire. The heat can crack flue tile, warp the damper and damage the masonry and nearby framing with no sign outside, so keep the fireplace off until the flue is inspected and repaired.
