How a gas fireplace lights

Most gas fireplaces start with a small pilot flame. On older units, a thermocouple or thermopile sits in that flame and produces a tiny electric signal that tells the gas valve it is safe to open. Newer units use an electronic igniter and a control module instead of a standing pilot. If any link in that chain fails, the valve stays closed as a safety measure.

That is why a gas fireplace that will not light is usually a safety part doing its job, not a broken unit.

The repairs we make most

The fixes we make again and again are a dirty or misaligned pilot, a worn thermocouple or thermopile, a failed igniter or module, a sticking valve and dead batteries in the receiver. Burner ports clogged with dust or debris cause weak or uneven flames, and logs set in the wrong place cause soot on the glass.

Every part we fit is the one listed for your unit. Generic parts can fit and still behave differently, which is not a risk worth taking with gas.

Yearly service

Gas fireplaces need a yearly cleaning and check just like wood ones, only different. We clean the pilot and burner, check the glass gasket, test the safety controls and look at the vent for blockages or damage. Manufacturers expect this in their manuals.

A unit that has sat unused through the hot months is a good candidate for a check before the first cool evening.

When you smell gas

A rotten egg smell means leave the house and call the gas utility from outside. Do not light anything, flip switches or use a phone indoors. We repair the fireplace once the utility has made the line safe.

Gas piping and appliance work in Florida follows the Fuel Gas code, which draws on NFPA 54. We work within those rules on every repair.

Questions Homeowners Ask Us

Who fixes gas fireplaces?

Gas fireplaces are repaired by fireplace technicians who work on the pilot, igniter, valve, burner and venting together. Some plumbers handle the gas line up to the unit, but the fireplace controls are a specialty. Our technicians diagnose and repair gas fireplaces in Panama City with the maker's listed parts.

Why does my gas fireplace keep going out?

A weak or dirty pilot flame is the usual cause. A worn thermocouple or thermopile, or a vent problem that trips a safety shutoff, can do it too; low gas pressure and a failing valve are next on the list, and cleaning and testing the pilot assembly comes first.

Why does my gas fireplace smell?

A new or newly lit gas fireplace can give off a short burning smell as dust and paint cure. A rotten egg smell is different: it signals a gas leak, so leave the house and call the gas utility from outside. Ongoing odors can also come from dirty burners, misplaced logs or a vent problem.

Should a gas fireplace be serviced regularly?

Yes. Most makers ask for a yearly service in the manual. The visit covers cleaning the pilot and burner, checking the glass gasket, testing the safety controls and looking over the vent and termination, which catches worn parts before a cool evening finds them.

Why is my gas fireplace remote not working?

Dead batteries are the usual reason. The handset and the receiver near the gas valve both use them, and the pairing between the two can also drop. Check both sets of batteries first, then have the receiver, wiring or control module tested if the fireplace still will not answer.

Should the gas fireplace pilot light stay on?

Some gas fireplaces have a standing pilot meant to stay lit, and others use an electronic igniter with no constant flame. On a standing pilot, many owners turn it off in the hot months to save gas, then relight it in the fall following the manual; check the manual for your model before changing it.
