Signs This Job Is Due
Clay flue tiles crack from heat, water or a past chimney fire, and the joints between them can open. Not every damaged flue needs a full new liner. When the damage is limited, a local repair or a listed resurfacing system can bring the flue back into good shape; when it is not, we tell you relining is the answer.
- Pieces of clay tile on the smoke shelf or firebox floor
- Cracks or gaps seen when looking up the flue
- A flue damaged by a chimney fire
- A cracked top tile above the crown
What goes wrong with clay flues
Clay tiles are stacked inside the chimney with mortar joints between them. Rapid heating, a chimney fire, water from above and settling all crack tiles or open joints. A damaged flue can let heat and gases reach the brick and the framing beside the chimney, which NFPA 211 treats as a defect to fix before use.
The damage is usually only visible from inside the flue.
Repair options
Damage at the top tile, above the roof, can often be fixed by replacing that tile when the crown is rebuilt. Joint gaps and small cracks lower down can be closed with a listed resurfacing system applied inside the flue. When tiles are cracked throughout or the flue is the wrong size for the appliance, a stainless liner is the reliable fix.
We explain which option suits your flue and why.
After a chimney fire
A chimney fire can crack tiles all the way down. After one, the flue must be inspected before the fireplace is used again, and relining is often the outcome.

Questions Homeowners Ask Us
Can a chimney flue be repaired?
Often, yes. A cracked top tile can be replaced, and gaps or small cracks lower in a clay flue can be sealed with a listed resurfacing system. When tiles are cracked throughout, or the flue does not suit the appliance, a stainless steel liner is the dependable repair. An inspection shows which applies.
Why is rain coming down the flue liner?
A missing, damaged or undersized cap is the usual way rain gets down the flue. A cracked top flue tile or crown lets it in too; the water runs down the inside of the flue to the smoke chamber and damper, and a properly sized cap with a sound crown and top tile stops it.
Why does my chimney have more than one flue?
Each flue usually serves its own appliance. A fireplace and a water heater, or two fireplaces on different floors, each need a flue sized to them and capped at the crown. Unused flues should still have a cap, because rain and animals find an open flue quickly.
Can a chimney flue pipe leak?
Yes. A metal flue pipe can leak water at loose joints, a damaged storm collar or a rusted cap. Exhaust can escape where sections have separated, and clay flues leak through cracked tiles and open joints; any flue that leaks water or gases needs repair before the appliance runs again.
