Signs This Job Is Due

A stone chimney or a chimney faced with stone veneer has more joint than a brick one, and every open joint is a place for rain to get in. Stones can also work loose. We reset loose stones, repoint the joints and, on veneer, check that water behind the stone can drain away.

  • Loose or missing stones on the chimney face
  • Open or crumbling joints between stones
  • Stains below the stone after rain
  • Veneer stones cracked or separating from the wall

Natural stone and veneer

A natural stone chimney is laid stone by stone like brick, with the stone carrying weight. Manufactured stone veneer is a lightweight cast product applied over a backing wall with a drainage layer behind it. Repairs differ: natural stone is reset and repointed, while veneer needs its backing and drainage checked as well.

The look can be similar, so we confirm what you have before quoting.

Resetting and repointing

Loose stones come out, the bed is cleaned, and the stone goes back in fresh mortar. Open joints are raked and repointed, matching the joint style, whether flush, recessed or raised. Mortar color is matched as closely as practical.

Joints are where stone chimneys leak, so careful repointing is often the most valuable part of the job.

Veneer that leaks

Manufactured veneer leaks most often where it meets the roof or where the weep screed at its base is missing or buried. Water then sits behind the veneer. We look for that detail and explain what fixing it involves.

Questions Homeowners Ask Us

Why does a stone chimney leak when it rains?

A stone chimney leaks in rain mostly through open mortar joints, loose stones, a cracked crown or failed flashing at the roof. Manufactured stone veneer can also hold water behind it when its weep screed or drainage layer is missing. Repointing the joints and fixing the top usually stops the leak.

What chimney cap fits a stone chimney?

A stone chimney usually takes either a single-flue cap on the clay flue tile or a full-crown cap fastened to a flat crown on top. Irregular stone tops may need a crown recast flat before a full-crown cap can sit on it; the crew measures the flue and crown on the inspection.

Can fireplace stone be repaired?

Yes. Loose fireplace stones can be reset, cracked stones replaced and open joints repointed with matched mortar. Inside the firebox, stone is not a substitute for firebrick, so fire-facing surfaces use refractory materials. The crew matches stone and mortar as closely as practical on the face.

Can a chimney leak through the joints of a stone chimney?

Yes. The mortar joints between stones are the weakest point for water on a stone chimney, and open joints let rain into the masonry. Repointing them with a suitable mortar, along with a sound crown and flashing, keeps a stone chimney dry.
