Signs This Job Is Due

After a strong storm, the chimney is one of the first things to take a hit: caps blow off, chase covers lift, flashing peels back and limbs knock loose brick. We check every part the weather reached, make the top weather-tight first, then plan the permanent repairs in the order that keeps rain out.

  • A cap or chase cover missing, bent or hanging loose
  • Flashing lifted or torn at the roof line
  • Brick or crown pieces knocked off by wind or a limb
  • New leaks near the chimney after the storm

What storms do to chimneys

Wind gets under caps and chase covers and lifts them off, peels flashing back from the brick and works loose brick at the top of the stack. Wind-driven rain then finds every new opening. A falling limb can crack a crown or knock courses off entirely.

Some of this is easy to see from the yard. Lifted flashing and a cracked crown often are not.

Wait for safe conditions

Please stay off a wet or windy roof. If water is coming in, put a bucket under it, move belongings away and call our 24/7 emergency line. Once the weather settles, we can cover an open flue or tarp around the chimney the same day when the schedule allows.

Our hurricane chimney prep guide covers what to check before the season starts. Do not use the fireplace until the chimney has been checked, since a damaged cap or cracked flue can send sparks or smoke the wrong way.

From temporary to permanent

Our first job is stopping more water from getting in. The permanent repairs follow on a dry day: a new cap or chase cover fastened for wind, rebuilt flashing, crown work and brick repair. We keep a written record of what we found and what we did, which homeowners find useful afterwards.

Questions Homeowners Ask Us

What counts as chimney damage from a storm?

A cap or chase cover blown off or bent is easy to spot. Flashing lifted at the roof, a crown or brick cracked by wind or a falling limb, and leaks that start right after the storm count too. Flashing and crown cracks usually need a closer look from the roof.

Can wind damage a chimney?

Yes. High wind can lift a loosely fastened cap or chase cover and peel flashing away from the brick. Gusts also work loose brick at the top of an old stack; wind-driven rain then gets into those openings, so caps and chase covers fastened properly for wind hold up far better.

What is a chimney storm collar?

A storm collar is a metal ring clamped around a metal chimney pipe just above where it passes through the roof or chase cover. It sheds rain away from the gap around the pipe. A loose or missing storm collar is a common leak point on factory-built chimneys after a storm.

Should I use the fireplace after storm damage to the chimney?

No. Wait until the chimney has been inspected. A missing cap, cracked crown, displaced flue tile or debris in the flue can send sparks onto the roof or smoke into the house; once the crew confirms the flue is clear and sound, the fireplace can be used again.
