At a glance

Wood-burning inserts slide into an existing masonry fireplace and turn it into a closed firebox that heats far better. Our Panama City crew connects each insert to a full-length stainless liner. The job finishes with a surround panel, a cap and clearance checks against the listing.

Signs This Job Is Due

An open fireplace sends much of its heat up the chimney. A wood-burning insert is a closed firebox that slides into the existing opening, burns more efficiently and puts more heat into the room. We size the insert to the opening, run a full-length liner from its collar to the top and finish it with a surround.

  • An open fireplace that sends most of its heat up the chimney
  • Drafts from the fireplace when it is not in use
  • A firebox in decent shape you want to keep using
  • Smoke or ash spilling from an open opening

How an insert works

An insert is a steel or cast iron firebox with a glass door that sits inside your existing fireplace. Air for the fire is controlled, the fire burns hotter and cleaner, and a blower on many models pushes warm air into the room. The original fireplace becomes the shell around it.

The insert vents through its own stainless liner, not the old open flue.

Fitting it right

We measure the opening, the depth and the hearth, then match an insert whose listing allows that fireplace. The liner is sized to the insert collar and connected directly to it, which the manufacturer's instructions and NFPA 211 expect. The surround panel closes the gap around the insert face.

The hearth in front may need extending to meet the insert's listing.

Before the install

The existing chimney is swept and inspected first, and any firebox or damper issues that affect the install are fixed or noted. The old damper is usually removed or locked open to make room for the liner.

Questions Homeowners Ask Us

What fireplace insert do I need?

The right fireplace insert depends on your fireplace opening size and depth, the hearth, the fuel you want and the room it will heat. The insert's listing must allow your fireplace type. The crew measures the opening and hearth on a free visit and narrows down the options.

How much does a fireplace insert cost?

The insert model sets the largest part of the price. Liner length and diameter, the surround panel, any hearth extension and the chimney prep before install come next; a small wood insert in a short, sound flue is the easy case, and the estimate lists every line.

Are wood burning fireplace inserts worth it?

For frequent use, usually yes. A closed firebox with a door burns hotter and cleaner than an open fireplace, sending more heat into the room and less up the flue. For occasional fires, an open fireplace with a sound damper and liner may be enough.

Do fireplace inserts need a blower?

A blower is not required on most fireplace inserts, but it helps move warm air from around the firebox into the room. Without a blower, an insert still heats by radiation through the glass and steel; the insert manual lists blower options and power needs.
