Signs This Job Is Due

A gas insert is a sealed firebox with a glass front that slides into an existing fireplace. It pulls outside air in and sends exhaust out through liners run up the old chimney, so it heats the room without drawing room air. We size the insert, run the liners and finish the surround.

  • An old wood fireplace you want to heat with
  • Drafts and heat loss through an open fireplace
  • An old gas unit or log set you want to upgrade
  • A sound chimney that can carry the insert liners

How a gas insert vents

Direct-vent inserts are sealed. One liner brings combustion air down from outside and another, or the outer part of a co-axial liner, carries exhaust up. Room air is not used, so the insert heats efficiently and keeps exhaust out of the house.

The old chimney becomes the chase for the liners.

Sizing and fit

We measure the width, height and depth of the opening and the hearth, then pick an insert whose listing allows that fireplace. The surround panel closes the gap around the face. Inserts are rated by heat output, and we match it to the room so it is comfortable rather than too hot.

The gas connection follows the Florida Fuel Gas code based on NFPA 54.

Preparing the chimney

The chimney is cleaned and checked before the liners go in, and the old damper is removed or secured so the liners pass through. A termination cap from the insert's listing finishes the top.

Questions Homeowners Ask Us

How much does a gas fireplace insert cost?

The insert's heat output and finish drive most of the cost. Liner length, the surround, any gas line run to the shutoff and the chimney prep add to it. A standard insert in a short flue with gas nearby is quickest, and each item is written down after the free visit.

Can a gas insert go in an existing fireplace?

Yes. A gas insert is designed to slide into an existing masonry or factory-built fireplace whose listing allows it. Liners run up the old chimney to the top for air and exhaust; the opening size, depth and hearth decide which inserts fit.

What is the difference between a gas insert and a zero clearance fireplace?

A gas insert goes inside an existing fireplace and uses the old chimney as a chase for its liners. A zero clearance fireplace is a complete factory-built unit framed into a wall, with its own vent run. Inserts upgrade an existing fireplace; zero clearance units create a new one.

What are gas fireplace inserts?

Gas fireplace inserts are sealed gas fireboxes with glass fronts that fit inside an existing fireplace. They vent through liners run up the chimney, use outside air for combustion and heat the room much better than an open fireplace or gas logs; most run from a remote or wall switch.
