At a glance

Gas log installation sets a vented or vent-free log set in a sound wood-burning fireplace. Our Panama City crew sizes the burner to the firebox, places each log by the manual and locks the damper open for vented sets; vent-free sets come with room size rules, which we explain.

Signs This Job Is Due

Gas logs turn a working wood fireplace into a gas one without changing the firebox. You get a real flame at the turn of a valve or a remote. We size the burner to the firebox, install vented or vent-free sets to their manuals and place every log where it belongs.

  • A wood fireplace you want to run on gas
  • Old logs that burn sooty or uneven
  • A gas line already at the fireplace
  • Wanting flame without hauling wood

Vented and vent-free

Vented log sets burn with a yellow, natural-looking flame and send exhaust up the open chimney, so the damper must stay open while they run; many installs fit a damper clamp to make sure. Vent-free sets burn cleaner but release exhaust into the room, so their listings limit room size and run time.

We go through both types with you at the firebox before you choose a set.

Sizing and setup

The burner pan has to fit the firebox with the clearances in the manual, and the log set has to suit that burner. Logs placed wrong cause soot and odor, so we follow the placement diagram exactly.

Gas piping follows the Florida Fuel Gas code based on NFPA 54, and a gas professional handles any new line.

Before you switch to gas

The chimney is swept and inspected first, since a vented set still relies on a sound flue. The firebox and damper are checked as well.

Questions Homeowners Ask Us

Do I need logs for a gas fireplace?

A gas fireplace or burner needs logs or other media such as glass or stones placed as the manual shows. The logs shape the flame and protect the burner. Running a burner with the wrong media or none at all can cause soot and poor combustion, so use the set listed for that burner.

Do I need a fireplace screen with gas logs?

A screen or glass doors are recommended with gas logs to keep children, pets and fabrics away from the hot logs and flame. Some log set manuals require a screen; when glass doors are used with vented logs, they must be open while the logs burn.

Are ventless gas logs safe?

Vent-free gas logs are designed to burn cleanly and include an oxygen depletion sensor that shuts them off if oxygen drops. They are safe when installed in a room large enough for their listing, used within the manual's run times and maintained. A carbon monoxide alarm nearby is still recommended.

What is the difference between gas logs and a gas insert?

Gas logs sit in an open fireplace and vent through the existing chimney with the damper open. A gas insert is a sealed firebox with glass that slides into the fireplace and vents through its own liner; an insert gives much more heat; logs give an open-fire look.
