Signs This Job Is Due

A gas fireplace is only as good as its vent. Joints that separate, a termination too close to a window or a run longer than the manual allows can trip the unit's safety shutoff or let exhaust spill. We install and repair direct-vent and B-vent systems to the listing.

  • The fireplace shuts off after running a few minutes
  • Soot or discoloration around the outside termination
  • A termination near a window, door or deck
  • Rust or loose sections on the vent pipe

Two kinds of vent

Direct-vent systems use a pipe within a pipe: fresh air comes in through the outer ring and exhaust goes out through the inner pipe. They can end on an outside wall or the roof. B-vent systems are single-wall-style vents that rise vertically and draw exhaust up by natural draft, using room air for combustion.

Each fireplace lists exactly which vent pipe, lengths and turns it allows.

Faults we fix

Separated joints, crushed or rusted sections, a blocked termination, nests in the cap and runs that exceed the allowed length or number of elbows are common. Many units shut themselves off when the vent misbehaves, which is the safety system working.

Terminations need set distances from windows, doors, soffits and walkways, and a new window or deck can put an old termination out of compliance.

Questions Homeowners Ask Us

How are gas fireplaces vented?

Gas fireplaces vent in one of three ways. Direct-vent units use a sealed pipe within a pipe through a wall or roof to a termination cap. B-vent units send exhaust up a vertical vent using room air, while vent-free units have no vent and release exhaust into the room.

Does a gas fireplace need a vent?

Most do. A gas fireplace needs the direct-vent or B-vent system named in its listing; only units listed as vent-free run without one, and they carry room size and run-time limits, so a vented unit must not run with its vent blocked or disconnected.

Does a gas fireplace have a flue?

A gas fireplace has a vent rather than a traditional masonry flue. Direct-vent units use a sealed pipe system, and B-vent units use a vertical metal vent. Gas logs in a masonry fireplace use the existing chimney with the damper held open.

What is the outside vent cover on a gas fireplace?

The outside vent cover is the termination cap of a direct-vent gas fireplace. It lets combustion air in and exhaust out through separate passages and keeps rain, debris and animals out; some have a guard around them to keep people from touching the hot surface.
