Signs This Job Is Due

The firebox is the brick box where the fire actually burns. It takes direct heat every time the fireplace is used, so firebrick cracks and the mortar between it erodes. Gaps in the firebox let heat reach materials behind it. We replace damaged firebrick and repoint the joints with refractory mortar made for the heat.

  • Cracked or broken firebrick in the back or side walls
  • Mortar joints in the firebox eroded or missing
  • Loose firebrick that moves when pressed
  • Gaps where the firebox meets the hearth or the damper

Why the firebox needs to be tight

Firebrick is made to take heat, and refractory mortar holds it together. When joints open or bricks crack through, heat can reach the ordinary brick and framing behind the firebox. The Florida Building Code sets out how a firebox is built, including its walls and lining.

Hairline cracks on the face of a firebrick are common and often fine. Bricks cracked through, loose or missing need attention.

How we repair it

Damaged bricks come out, the bed is cleaned, and new firebrick is set in a thin joint of refractory mortar. The other joints are raked and repointed. Ordinary mortar does not belong inside the firebox, because it breaks down in fire heat.

Where most of the firebox is worn, rebuilding the back and sides is often the cleaner job.

Letting it cure

Refractory mortar needs time to cure before a full fire. We give you a short schedule of small fires to bring it up to heat gently.

Questions Homeowners Ask Us

What is a chimney firebox?

The firebox is the part of a fireplace where the fire burns, lined with firebrick or refractory panels made to withstand high heat. It sits below the damper and smoke chamber and in front of the hearth. A sound firebox keeps heat away from the walls and framing behind it.

Why are bricks falling out of my fireplace?

Eroded refractory mortar is the usual reason. Ordinary mortar from a past repair breaks down in fire heat, and moisture from above weakens the joints too. Loose firebrick should be reset or replaced before the next fire, with each mortar joint repointed around it.

What mortar is used to repair a fireplace?

Inside a firebox, repairs use refractory mortar, a heat-rated material made for fireplace temperatures. It is applied in thin joints between firebricks. Ordinary masonry mortar breaks down in fire heat and should not be used where the fire burns, though it is fine on the outer face.

Can fireplace bricks be replaced?

Yes. Individual firebricks can be cut out and replaced with new firebrick set in refractory mortar, as long as the surrounding firebox is sound. When many bricks are cracked or loose, rebuilding the firebox walls is usually the better repair; the free inspection shows which applies.
