Signs This Job Is Due

The hearth is the floor in front of the fireplace opening, there to catch sparks and rolling embers. Cracked tile, loose stone or a hearth that sank or separated from the firebox lets heat and embers reach the floor below. We repair or rebuild the hearth on a sound, noncombustible base.

  • Cracked or loose tiles, stones or bricks on the hearth
  • A gap between the hearth and the firebox floor
  • A hearth that has sunk or tilted
  • Scorch marks on flooring near the hearth edge

What the hearth does

The hearth extension protects the floor in front of a wood-burning fireplace from sparks and embers. The Florida Building Code sets how far it must extend in front of and beside the opening, and it has to be noncombustible all the way down to its support.

Decorative tile laid over wood flooring with no proper base does not meet that rule.

Common hearth repairs

Most repairs are cracked or loose tile and stone, reset on fresh mortar. A hearth that has sunk usually has a failed base, which needs rebuilding. A gap where the hearth meets the firebox lets embers fall into it and gets sealed with refractory material.

If the hearth is too small for the opening, we can extend it with matching material.

Matching the look

We match tile, stone or brick as closely as we can. When an exact match is not available, we talk through options such as replacing the full hearth surface so it looks deliberate.

Questions Homeowners Ask Us

Why does a fireplace need a hearth?

A hearth protects the floor from sparks, embers and rolling logs. The hearth has to be noncombustible masonry or tile on a proper base, and large enough to cover where embers land. Without one, a single popped ember can scorch or ignite a wood or carpet floor.

How far must a hearth extend in front of a fireplace?

The Florida Building Code sets two sizes. Openings under 6 square feet need at least 16 inches in front and 8 inches beyond each side; larger openings need 20 inches in front and 12 inches to each side, and factory-built units follow their own listing.

What is a fireplace hearth slab?

A hearth slab is the noncombustible base, usually concrete or masonry, that supports the hearth surface in front of and under the firebox. Tile, stone or brick finishes sit on top of it. A cracked or sunken slab causes the finish above to crack and separate from the firebox.

Can a fireplace have no hearth?

A wood-burning fireplace must have a hearth extension under the Florida Building Code. Some electric fireplaces and certain listed gas units do not need one, and their manuals say so; removing the hearth from a wood-burning fireplace leaves the floor unprotected and is not code compliant.
