Signs This Job Is Due
The damper is the metal plate just above the firebox that opens for a fire and closes when the fireplace is idle. In humid air, cast iron dampers rust, stick and warp until they will not open fully or will not seal. We free and adjust what can be saved and replace what cannot.
- A damper handle that will not move or moves freely with no effect
- Smoke spilling in because the damper will not open fully
- Air, insects or humid smells coming in with the damper closed
- Rust flakes falling onto the firebox floor
What the damper does
Open, the damper lets smoke into the smoke chamber and up the flue. Closed, it keeps rain, insects and outside air from coming down into the room. A damper that will not open causes smoke to spill; one that will not close lets conditioned air escape.
Most throat dampers are cast iron, and our humid, salty air is hard on them.
Repair or replace
A damper stuck with rust can often be freed, cleaned and adjusted. A broken handle or linkage can be replaced. When the plate has warped or the frame has rusted through, the plate or the whole assembly is replaced.
In some fireplaces the old frame cannot come out without damaging the masonry. Then a top sealing damper on the flue is the cleaner fix.
Using the damper
Open it fully before lighting a fire and leave it open until the ashes are cold. Close it when the fireplace is not in use to keep humid air out.

Questions Homeowners Ask Us
Should the fireplace damper be open or closed?
Keep the fireplace damper open whenever a fire is burning and until the ashes are completely cold, so smoke and gases can leave. Close it when the fireplace is not in use to keep out rain, insects and humid outdoor air, and to keep cooled indoor air from escaping up the chimney.
How much does a chimney damper replacement cost?
The price turns on whether the damper plate can be freed or swapped on its own. Pulling out the whole assembly, or choosing a top sealing damper instead, makes a bigger job; access inside the firebox matters too, and each option is written down side by side.
What is the difference between a damper and a flue?
The flue is the passage inside the chimney that carries smoke up and out. The damper is a movable plate that opens or closes that passage, usually just above the firebox. A damper controls the flue; it does not replace the need for a sound flue liner.
Can a fireplace damper handle be replaced?
Yes. A broken or detached damper handle, rod or linkage can usually be replaced without changing the damper plate. If the plate itself is rusted or warped, it may need replacing at the same time; the crew checks the whole assembly before ordering parts.
